Multicultural Alpha  (Alpha for ESOL as developed by Kathy Watson)  provides an easy way to discuss some of the most asked questions of life and faith. The course is in English but made more accessible in format and vocabulary. The course consists of a meal, a talk on a topic like prayer, or healing, and time to discuss your thoughts with your fellow guests every 10-15 minutes.  It’s like a stimulating dinner party with new friends.

Topics covered

The course covers the same top 15 frequently asked questions of life and faith as the traditional Alpha course:

  • Is there more to life than this?
  • Who is Jesus?
  • Why did Jesus die?
  • How can I be sure of my faith?
  • Why and how do I pray?
  • Why and how should I read the Bible?
  • How does God guide us?
  • Who is the Holy Spirit and what does the Holy Spirit do?
  • How can I resist evil?
  • Why and how should we tell others?
  • Does God heal today?
  • What about the church?
  • How can I make the most of the rest of my life?

In An Unstoppable Force, author Erwin McManus offers a vision of the church taking its rightful place. An unstoppable force created to change the world. A church that is active and engaged with its community. A church that dares to cut itself free from atrophied practices and programs to flourish in creative and compelling worship. Where teachers of the Word risk reaching out to our multi-sensory, multi-layered culture with music, the arts and other unique expressions of love and faith. A church that prospers in the life of Christ.

New life comes into a church – an apostolic ethos – when it realizes its destiny is found in its early church origins. A living part of the body of Christ. Driven to find its uniqueness beyond being a cookie cutter copy of the “successful church.”

An Unstoppable Force will:

  • Challenge you to see God’s vision for the mission and purpose of the church.
  • Help you to explore specific changes in the culture that call for immediate change in the church.
  • Offer practical ways for your church to find its unique voice and identity to express Christ’s love and faith to your culture.
  • Present interactive questions in each chapter to foster discussion about the life of your church, its focus on Christ, and how it can be a richer influence on your culture.

Never settle for church as usual again! Let An Unstoppable Force excite and inspire you to be part of the Church that GOD had in mind!

David Anderson writes about multicultural leadership not from the perspective of an ivory tower intellectual, but as a hands-on practitioner who loves and believes in the body of Christ. . . . If you believe there is no solution to the race problem, I urge you to reconsider and to learn from someone who is on the frontlines of making multicultural ministry a reality in the church today. -Bill Hybels, founding and senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church Multiculturalism isn’t a trend, it’s a reality. Evidence of this country’s rich racial mix is all around us in our schools, our stores, our neighborhoods, our recreational facilities-everywhere except our churches. Heaven may include every culture, tongue, and tribe, but in the United States, Sunday morning remains one of the last bastions of ethnic separatism. It’s time to stop merely talking about multicultural worship and start living it. In this groundbreaking book, David Anderson invites us all-African-American, Asian, Caucasian, and Latino-to learn how to dance the dance of multicultural ministry. We’ve all got different moves, but that’s the beauty of diversity: the various gifts we bring, the wisdom of our heritages, the different creative ways we express the same Lord. Think it can’t be done? Think again. As Anderson demonstrates, it is being done successfully by more and more churches. Wherever your church is now on the multicultural continuum, you can join the ranks of those moving toward a diverse and thriving ministry. Combining frontline insights with inspiring stories, Anderson takes you and your church into the strategy-level realities of what it takes to make multicultural ministry work in your setting. Do you hear the beat of the Spirit? God is calling your church to the dance of unity in diversity. Don’t hold back! Grab this book, get out on the dance floor, and let Multicultural Ministry show you the steps. Includes a Racial Reconciliation survey and six-session Racial Reconciliation curriculum.

Friends International – Visa Course

What is the Visa Course?

Each year free courses are run by people from local churches which explain the Christian faith. This is an opportunity to find out more about Christianity and the Bible and is open to students of every nationality or religious background.

A visa in your passport gives you access to another place.  It allows you to go into a country, to look around, to observe the culture and the way people do things, to meet the people, to ask questions and to understand the language.  It gives you an opportunity to find out for yourself about the place you are visiting.

Likewise, the Visa course is designed to help you begin to understand the Christian faith and the Bible.  It is an opportunity for you to listen, to discuss and to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere.  Over the eight week course we will look at what Christians believe, and study some passages from the Bible.

Who is it for?

The Visa course is for any student who wants to find out more about what Christians believe, and about the Bible.  It is a course written specially for those whose first language is not English.  It doesn’t matter what religion or nationality you are – anyone is welcome to join us.

What exactly will we study?

Each week we look at a different subject connected to the Bible.  Typically, we start each evening with tea and coffee, and time for chatting together.  We then spend about one hour studying our subject for the evening, which usually includes reading the Bible, some group discussion, and time for any questions.

Week Subject
1 How do we know there is a God?
An introduction to the Visa course, looking at some of the evidence for the existence of God.
2 God is Good… so what’s wrong with the world?
The problem of suffering.  Can we believe in a good God?
3 The Bible
What is the Bible?  Why do Christians believe it is so important?
4 Who is Jesus?
Was Jesus just a good man, a wise teacher?  What did he say about himself?
5 Why did Jesus die?
Was Jesus death a terrible mistake?  Is it important?
6 The Holy Spirit

7 Prayer
Does prayer really work?
